People have a tendency to over react when it comes to women's issues. Hell, these days people are over reacting to a lot of things. There are so many subjects we aren’t allowed to discuss in public. There are still things we aren’t allowed to do in public, things as simple as feed your child or pee in peace. We call them taboo, when we do talk about them.
The Ovary Act was born out of a desire for a platform to discuss these issues with the public. It began after I posted the following status on Facebook:
The response I got from that post was phenomenal. Women wanted an outlet, we craved the ability to talk about our bodies and struggles openly instead of hiding behind closed doors with select other women. Men need to be apart of these conversation, women need these conversation to happen. My friends and I started talking and decided to make it a regular thing and invite the world to collaborate with us. The internet might have tons of information for you to acquire but you can only look for what you know and many of us truly don’t know our bodies or options or friends that will help us figure it out. We need a place to share our experiences with breastfeeding, children, menstration, sexual assault, and so much more with other people and not be judged or attacked. We need a safe space to ask questions and get a variety of answers from people of different walks of life and expertise.
We hope this becomes that place. For now, it’s a small group of friends getting together, drinking wine, and talking about anything and everything. In the first few meetings we’ve danced in our underwear, laughed, cried, and accepted each other as unique and beautiful individual women. Even if no one ever hears us or calls in to join our conversation, its already proving far more cathartic than any of us anticipated.
*Right now we are compiling recordings and organizing our plans to go live. We hope to have The Ovary Act in full swing by Thanksgiving with weekly/bimonthly podcasts and a live segment once a month for special topics that require your input and voice.
